Decision-making is at the heart of product management, yet it remains one of the most challenging aspects of the role. Statistics illustrate the obstacles PMs face that make empowering teams so difficult, from competing priorities to constant interruptions. As leaders, we can’t ignore these realities but we can change how we respond.

The Price of Decision-Making Challenges

In a 2022 survey conducted by Airfocus, 56.4% of product managers identified competing objectives as a significant challenge, followed closely by insufficient time (50.8%) and lack of role clarity (35.0%). These factors create a perfect storm that complicates decision-making. Imagine juggling stakeholders’ demands while operating under unclear expectations—it’s a recipe for gridlock. No wonder many PMs feel stuck in a reactive cycle rather than driving meaningful progress.

Even more startling, product managers reported spending 45% less time on strategy than they’d like in 2023. According to the same air focus survey, over half their time—52%—is swallowed up by unplanned activities. This misalignment leaves little room for thoughtful, strategic decisions, the kind that leads to groundbreaking products and delighted customers.

Building Confidence Amid Uncertainty

The challenges extend beyond logistics. A 2022 Product Excellence Report revealed that only 36% of PMs are confident their products and features consistently meet customer expectations. This statistic underscores a troubling reality: the disconnect between the decisions we make and the value we deliver. It’s a stark reminder that without the right frameworks and support, even experienced PMs can struggle to navigate the complexities of customer-centric innovation.

Empowering Teams as the Solution

These challenges are precisely why empowering teams is so crucial. Marty Cagan reminds us in Empowered, “The job of a product leader is to give teams the context and the autonomy to make decisions without having to run everything by the chain of command.” By shifting our approach from micromanaging to empowering, we not only relieve some of these pressures but also unleash our teams’ full potential.

Practical Steps to Get Started

  1. Audit Your Decision-Making Process
Identify decisions that regularly require your input. Could they be delegated? Are your teams waiting on approvals they shouldn’t need?
  2. Run Decision-Making Retrospectives
After a project or milestone, reflect with your team: What decisions went well? Where did delays occur? Use this insight to refine your approach.
  3. Empower with Data and Tools
Equip your teams with the resources they need to make informed decisions. Whether it’s customer feedback, analytics dashboards, or training in decision frameworks, make sure they have what they need to succeed.

The Payoff: Teams That Lead Themselves

When product leaders empower their teams to decide, they unlock untapped potential. Teams become more agile, more creative, and more aligned with customer needs. Stakeholders experience smoother collaboration, and the organization benefits from faster, better outcomes.

Ask yourself: Are you creating an environment where teams can thrive as decision-makers, or are you inadvertently holding the reins too tightly?

Empowering your team to decide isn’t just good for them—it’s the ultimate multiplier for your impact as a product leader. Start small, trust deeply, and watch your team rise to the challenge.

Take the First Step

Identify one decision this week that you’d typically make and delegate it to your team instead. Share the context, define the guardrails, and give them the autonomy to choose.
